Cutting Board
They come in all shapes, sizes and styles, but they’re essential for prepping your grub. Because chopping onions on your kitchen counter is a great way to lose your security deposit!

Sauté (aka Frying) Pan
You’ll use this for everything from scrambled eggs to a pan-seared steak.

Sauce Pan
You’ll need this for boiling water, heating sauce and making soups, chili and stews.

Olive Oil
Cooking with extra virgin olive oil adds a nice flavor to many dishes, it’s heart-healthy and can be picked up for just a few bucks at stores like Trader Joe’s.

Butter
Much like bacon, everything is better with butter - in moderation of course. Pick up a stick or two of the unsalted variety to keep in the fridge.

Garlic

Powered, granulated, minced, you name it, garlic has a rich flavor that you’ll use in many recipes. It’s also good for you!

Onion
Fresh onion is always preferred, but keeping some Onion Powder on hand can deepen the flavor of many a dish.

Parsley
Like onion, fresh is best, and it’s pennies at the store, but for those that don’t cook that often, a small bottle of dried parsley is great for a wide variety of dishes and sprinkle or two on top as garnish.

Kosher Salt
Or Sea Salt. In most stores it costs the same as your typical table salt, but is so much more flavorful and because it's not compacted, you’ll use less, which is a good thing!

Black Pepper
Keep a bottle on hand to spice up your meal.

There are plenty more items one can get for their kitchen, but these will be a good start. Once you get more comfortable cooking and want to expand your recipes, you can start slowly adding to your kitchen and pantry.
